It is a widely held belief that fruits are good for your health. However, not all fruits are equally healthy.
Renowned Harvard gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi has revealed which types of fruits can negatively impact digestion and gut health. While some garden fruits are a real treasure trove for health, others can cause indigestion and inflammation. Here's what he found.
A diet rich in fruit is often recommended as the key to a healthy life, but Harvard's Dr Sethi warns that not all fruit is created equal. His analysis shows how certain types of fruit can negatively impact blood sugar levels and gut health.
Which fruit is at the end of the list?
Last on the list were overripe bananas. Dr. Sethi calls them “yellow-skinned chocolate bars” because of their high sugar content. As bananas ripen, the amount of resistant starch and fiber decreases while sugar levels increase, which can negatively impact blood sugar and gut health. Slightly green bananas, which contain more fiber, were rated a 5/10. Bananas will ripen faster if you keep them in the kitchen, where they rot the fastest, which is where they should be.
Which fruit is best for health?
Blueberries and pomegranates top the list. This fruit is rich in antioxidants, which help fight free radicals, reduce inflammation, and lower the risk of diseases like diabetes and cancer. Pomegranates are especially prized for their ellagitannin, a powerful polyphenol that supports heart health and reduces inflammation, while blueberries are said to be the fastest at clearing blood vessels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
What about other fruits?
Melons, pears and apples were in the middle of the list, while grapes and oranges received lower ratings. Although grapes contain vitamin C and potassium, their nutritional value is lower compared to other fruits. Oranges are rich in folate and antioxidants, but excessive consumption of citrus fruits may increase the risk of skin cancer, according to one study.
Dr. Sethi reminds us that moderation and choosing the right fruits are key. While some fruits are healthier than others, a varied diet rich in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins remains the best way to stay healthy.
