A 165 m² house offered free of charge? Yes, but the condition might make you think twice…

magine: a large, two-story house of 165 square meters, with a terrace, a double living room, and three bedrooms. And all of this… for free. No, this isn't a joke, but rather the slightly crazy idea of a Swedish couple who decided to part with their property. However, behind this golden opportunity lies a small catch that might deter many. Would you be tempted?

A free house, yes… but you have to move into it!

The story takes place in Sweden, where Göran Berg and Kerstin Persson, a retired couple, own two houses built side by side. One is their main residence, the other has remained empty for several years. Rather than watch it deteriorate, they made an unusual decision: to give it away.

But be warned, they don't want tenants or new neighbors in their garden. Their only requirement? The future owner will have to  move the house to another plot of land , at their own expense.

A gift… that requires a little elbow grease

On paper, the offer is enticing: the house is spacious, well-maintained, and full of charm with its two colorful bathrooms, walk-in closet, large living room, and even a parking space. The kind of property that many families dream of. But as is often the case, there's a catch…

Moving an entire house is a major undertaking. The whole structure has to be dismantled, a special transport convoy organized, the foundations rebuilt elsewhere, and everything connected to the water, electricity, and sewage systems… In short, it's an operation that's as technically demanding as it is expensive. We're talking  tens of thousands of euros  to do everything properly.

An appealing idea… but one that also holds people back

Despite the challenges, around forty people have already visited the site. Some are drawn to the project, while others are hesitant due to the logistics. Because yes, the house is free, but everything else is your responsibility – and that makes all the difference.

The couple, for their part, remain hopeful of finding the perfect person: someone with the desire to bring a new project to fruition, to revive this house... and above all, to move it elsewhere!

What if no one steps forward?

If no buyer comes forward, Göran and Kerstin already have a plan B:  to offer the house piece by piece . Windows, doors, kitchen, garage… everything could be salvaged by different households willing to give it a second life.

This approach to reuse reflects a strong trend in Northern Europe:  recycling existing materials  to limit waste and reduce the environmental footprint. A house to be dismantled, yes, but above all, to be reinvented.

Receiving a house for free is tempting. But sometimes, behind a great opportunity lies a challenge that requires boldness and creativity. So… ready to pack an entire house in your suitcases?
