Skin fungus – causes, symptoms and effective treatment

Ringworm is one of the most common dermatological diseases, caused by microscopic fungi that grow on the skin, nails or hair. It can be transmitted by direct contact from person to person, from animals, as well as through shared objects - towels, combs, shoes or clothes. Although they do not pose a serious threat to life, these infections can cause serious discomfort and should be treated promptly.

What are skin fungi?

Fungal skin infections (also called dermatophytosis ) are caused by microscopic organisms that feed on keratin, a substance that makes up the skin, hair, and nails. The most common causes are fungi of the genera Dermatophytes , Candida , and Malassezia .

These microorganisms can affect different parts of the body – the face, neck, limbs, torso, scalp or nails. Therefore, the manifestations of the disease can be different.

Symptoms of skin fungus

Symptoms depend on the location of the infection and the type of fungus. They most often appear on exposed areas of the skin - the face, hands or torso.

The most common symptoms include:

  • red or pink spots with a round shape and a lighter center;

  • peeling and shedding of the upper layer of skin;

  • itching, tingling and slight burning;

  • in some cases – blisters or crusts.

In some people, the infection develops in skin folds—in the groin, under the armpits, between the toes, under the breasts, or behind the ears. In these cases, you may experience:

  • redness and swelling;

  • skin wetting due to moisture;

  • soreness and burning;

  • expanding scaly areas.

More specific forms of fungal infection

1. Nail fungus (onychomycosis)

This is one of the most persistent forms. It manifests itself with:

  • yellowish or brownish discoloration of the nail;

  • thickening and brittleness;

  • separation of the nail from the bed.

2. Fungus on the feet and palms (“athlete’s foot”)

The skin becomes dry, white, and cracked, especially between the toes. It is often itchy and has an unpleasant odor.

3. Scalp fungus

It more often affects children. Symptoms include:

  • round areas without hair;

  • red spots and flakes on the scalp;

  • itching and small crusts.

Diagnostics

To make an accurate diagnosis, a skin test is performed - a sample is taken from the affected area and examined under a microscope or in a laboratory. This allows the exact type of fungus to be identified and the correct treatment to be chosen.

Treatment of skin fungus

At the first symptoms, it is important to start treatment on time. Antifungal preparations (antimycotics)
are most often used - in the form of creams, gels, lotions, sprays or shampoos. In more severe cases, tablets for internal use are used .

The most commonly used active substances are:

  • clotrimazole, miconazole, terbinafine, ketoconazole, fluconazole;

  • for scalp fungus – shampoos with ketoconazole or zinc pyrithione.

Typically, therapy lasts from 2 to 6 weeks depending on the severity and location of the infection.

Home care and prevention

To speed up recovery and prevent re-infection:

  • Keep the skin dry and clean;

  • Do not share personal items such as towels, shoes, and combs;

  • Wash clothes and bedding at high temperature;

  • Wear loose, cotton clothes;

  • Dry your skin well after bathing and sports;

  • Strengthen your immune system through healthy eating and getting enough sleep.

When to see a doctor

If the spots spread, the redness increases, or there is no improvement after a week of treatment, see a dermatologist. Only a specialist can prescribe the right therapy and prevent complications.
