These pests are commonly known as Drain Flies (or moth flies), and while they don’t bite, ignoring them is a mistake. Let’s break down why they appear and how to clear them out for good.
Why Do They Choose the Bathroom?
Drain flies (Psychodidae) are drawn to stagnant water, high humidity, and decomposing organic material.
The Breeding Ground: They don’t just hang out near drains; they lay their eggs in the slimy gelatinous film that builds up inside pipes, sewage lines, and under loose floor tiles.
Rapid Multipliers: A small issue can turn into a full-blown infestation quickly because their life cycle from egg to adult takes only a couple of weeks.
How to Get Rid of Them Effectively
1. Clean the Pipes Mechanically: Pouring boiling water down the drain helps, but it rarely removes the thick organic slime. Use a stiff pipe brush to physically scrub the inside of the drain.
2. Use Enzyme Cleaners: Instead of harsh chemicals that can damage older plumbing, use an enzyme-based drain cleaner. These formulas eat away the organic sludge where larvae feed and hide.
3. Keep it Dry: Fix any leaky faucets, seal loose grout around the shower or tub, and use a ventilation fan to lower the humidity levels after showering.
