Sarah stared at her phone, her thumb hovering over the screen. Her best friend, Chloe, had been bugging her for weeks to let her set her up with a guy from her office named Mark. Sarah had finally relented, and as she stood in front of her mirror adjusting her dress, she felt a familiar flutter of nervous anticipation. Modern dating was notoriously exhausting, a endless cycle of swipe-lefts and dry conversations. She hoped tonight would be different.

When Mark met her at the restaurant, Sarah’s first impression was overwhelmingly positive. He wasn’t just on time; he was early, standing by the hostess stand holding a beautiful, meticulously arranged bouquet of actual roses—not a sad, plastic-wrapped grocery store bunch thrown together at the last minute.

From that point on,  dinner was absolutely perfect. Mark was effortlessly charming, maintaining easy eye contact and asking genuine questions about her life and career. He wasn’t just putting on an act either; his old-school manners were entirely natural. He opened every door for her, seamlessly guided her through the crowded dining room, and pulled out her chair before taking his own seat.

Sarah found herself letting her guard down. By the time dessert arrived, she was already secretly looking forward to a second date.

Then came the end of the night. When the waiter subtly slid the check onto the edge of the table, Sarah did what she always did out of polite habit—she reached into her purse for her wallet to offer to split the bill.

It turned out to be a big mistake, at least in Mark’s eyes.

“Absolutely not,” Mark said smoothly, gently sliding his credit card down onto the bill before she could even unzip her purse. He offered her a warm, definitive smile. “A man pays on the first date.”

Sarah didn’t argue. In a dating culture where splitting tabs down to the exact cent via apps had become the norm, Mark’s firm insistence felt refreshing and chivalrous. They said their goodbyes with a sweet kiss on the cheek, and Sarah walked away thinking it was, without a doubt, one of the best first dates she had ever had. She went to sleep that night feeling a rare sense of optimism.

That was until the next morning…
