Here, we spoke with two cleaning experts to find out what exactly should only ever go on the top rack of the dishwasher during a clean. Below, she goes into detail regarding four categories of items that you will want to pay extra special attention to the next time you run a load.

Anything Plastic
First and foremost, anyone will tell you that anything you're washing that is made out of plastic should sit on the top rack of your dishwasher. This may include Tupperware lids, kids' cups, plastic drinking vessels, and the like. This is all due to the temperature on the bottom rack.
"The intense heat in the bottom can cause warping, and you don’t want a squished container for sure," Elizabeth Shields, the operations manager of Super Cleaning Service Louisville, a professional cleaning company, says.
Before putting anything plastic into the dishwasher in general, you will want to check that it is dishwasher safe. Items that have been marked as reusable are ones that you can wash this way.

Shallow Items

You likely go through plenty of mugs, small plates, bowls, and drinking glasses over the course of a given week. When washing these items, be sure to place them on the top rack of the dishwasher, according to Gerrod Moore, the integrated brand manager of Maytag Kitchen.
These items should always be placed in the dishwasher so that they face down. Another important tip to remember is to properly store them so they stay in place during the cycle. Make sure there's sufficient room in between each item, so they have room to move around without hitting each other.
Delicate Items
Whether you host dinner parties often or only break out the nicer plates and glasses on occasion, you want to ensure that your high-end, delicate serving pieces are going to stand the test of time.
Many people will choose to hand wash delicate dining items such as wine glasses or china, but if you opt to place these items in the dishwasher, they should definitely sit on the top rack.
"It has softer, more direct spray jets, so there’s less danger of things getting smashed by anything heavy," Shields says.
To ensure an extra safe washing experience, don't overcrowd the rack, either, Shields adds. It may be worth running two separate loads to ensure that all of your special pieces are thoroughly and safely cleaned rather than running the risk of breakage.
Saucers and Spoon Rests
While you may not find yourself washing saucers and spoon rests all too often, these types of items should go on the top rack when they need a cleaning, according to Shields. She worries that small items of this nature will get knocked around on the bottom rack, which could result in chipping or full-on breakage.
Baking Sheets and Materials
Once you've whipped up a batch of sweet treats, place those cleared-off baking sheets on the top rack of your dishwasher. However, be mindful that they do not block the water jets, either, Shields says and notes that for this reason, she will place them flat.
Speaking of baking, long spoons and spatulas should also go on the top rack of the dishwasher. This will ensure they're not being thrown around and banging against other items.
